About bespoke seal engraving

The art of seal engraving dates back centuries, and is part of an important jewellery tradition and heritage. Our craftspeople combine this time-honoured technique with more modern techniques, employing state-of-the-art tools and traditional methods to achieve unrivalled precision and detail.

Seal engraving is an extremely intricate technique that involves carving a design onto the surface of a piece of metal jewellery, usually a signet ring. There are two forms of seal engraving. One is a relief engraving, where the design is raised from the background, creating a three-dimensional effect. This is a convex image. The most common form of seal engraving is a 3D concave image and goes inwards. Seals were traditionally made in mirror image, so that when the design is pressed into sealing wax the image appears the right way round. If you don’t have a need to seal legal documents or letters with your own seal - and not many people do these days - we would recommend having the design the right way round so that it can be seen by the wearer. (Not a mirror image).

The process of seal engraving begins with the selection of a suitable material such as precious metals gold, silver or platinum, and a piece of jewellery such as a signet ring or broad pendant. Once these are chosen and your item hand crafted, the engraver carefully prepares the surface, ensuring it is smooth and free of any imperfections. Using specialised engraving tools, such as gravers and burins, the engraver begins to carve the design into the surface of the chosen material. These tools have sharp, pointed ends that are carefully manoeuvred to create precise cuts and lines. The engraver applies varying levels of pressure and control to achieve the desired depth and detail in the design.

The design itself can vary widely, ranging from intricate patterns and motifs to personal monograms, family crests, or even custom illustrations. Each element is meticulously engraved, with the engraver dedicating hours or even days to perfecting every minute detail.

Throughout the engraving process, the engraver exercises a high level of skill and judgement, as any mistake or slip of the hand could mar the result. Patience, precision, a steady hand and a keen eye for detail are essential qualities for a seal engraver.

Crafted with the finest materials, our bespoke jewellery seals are exquisite. Whether you choose sterling silver, yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum, each piece is meticulously finished to the highest standards, creating pieces which exude a radiant and enduring beauty that will be cherished for generations.

Seal engraving at Stephen Einhorn is not just about creating a beautiful piece of jewellery; it's about crafting a tangible legacy, an heirloom that will be passed down through the ages. It's a celebration of your individuality and a testament to the artistry and dedication of our master craftspeople.
